Liberals government Aren’t Working For the Next Generation
OTTAWA, ON – August 8, 2025
Following a Chinese media roundtable on employment hosted by the Alliance of Chinese Conservatives (AOCC), Garnett Genuis, Conservative Shadow Minister for Employment, issued a statement condemning the government's economic record in light of the latest Labour Force Survey.
“Because Carney has failed to restart our economy, young Canadians are bearing the brunt," Genuis stated. "This was confirmed in the July Labour Force Survey, which showed that youth employment has fallen to its lowest point in 25 years."
The Shadow Minister highlighted several key statistics from the report:
34,000 jobs were lost by youth aged 15 to 24 in July alone.
The youth unemployment rate rose to 14.6%.
The unemployment rate for students planning to return to school climbed to 17.5%.
“A first summer job used to provide young people with valuable experience and a stepping stone toward their future. But this summer, students are facing a major economic barrier,” Genuis said.
The statement also pointed to troubling signs for the broader Canadian workforce.
“Job prospects for Canadians as a whole haven’t improved much either. There are 1.6 million unemployed people across the country, and 23.8% of them—nearly 400,000—have been searching for work continuously for more than two years. This is the highest proportion of long-term unemployed since February 1998, excluding the pandemic period.”
Genuis noted that of the 41,000 total jobs lost in July, almost all were among young people and in the private sector, with the public sector being the only area of growth.
“In Ontario, one in every five workers is now a government employee,” he added. “The Liberal plan is not working—nor are our young people. Canadians need a real plan to unlock our economic potential, create jobs, and deliver a brighter future for the next generation.”
Members of Parliament Sandra Cobena and Costas Menegakis also attended the roundtable and responded to media questions related to employment.
